PO Box 294, Jesmond NSW 2299

Karaj gesamideanoj,

Jen la Novembra novajxletero, kaj finfine la kurso jam okazis. Nia
kurso estis tre sukcesa pro la multaj lernintoj kaj la reklamado
pri Esperanto en la novajxpapero.

Okazontoj:
Ekologia Hejmo (Newcastle EcoHome), 67a Hobart Rd. New Lambton 2305

Josh, Darwin, Andrew kaj Jonathan cxe-estis.

krokodilado):
It was a book on his father's shelf that got 15-year-old Jonathan Moylan
interested in Esperanto. "My father had learnt the language while he
was at Melbourne University," Jonathan says, "but he hadn't spoken it
for years. I borrowed the book and it got me interested." Within two weeks
Jonathan was speaking Esperanto and using the internet to find fellow
Esperantists in all corners of the globe. Admittedly he had a head-start
with languages: his mother is Belgian so he has spoken English and
French since birth. But Esperanto was designed to be easy to learn.
Created by a Polish oculist in 1998, the language has a completely regular
grammar and a small core vocabulary. When you take on Esperanto you are
taking on a world-view, it seems. "I like it because it's politically neutral
and is a truly international language," Jonathan says. "Studies have
shown that, if you learn Esperanto, you can learn other languages
more than twice as quickly." He says Hitler and Stalin had banned
the language, but after World War II it enjoyed a surge of popularity.
That died away in more recent years but the internet has given it
a new lease on life. There are said to be two million Esperanto speakers
and there is a whole library of books on the language - including a
translation of the Harry Potter books - at Esperanto House, in Redfern.
About a year-and-a-half ago Jonathan formed the Newcastle
Esperanto Society, bringing together like-minded Esperantists in
their chosen language. Jonathan has some other projects in
mind too. "I have permission from the United Nations to translate
their permanent pages and I'm looking at the idea of signs in
Esperanto at international areas like airports," he says. If you
always wanted to be multilingual but can't spare much time,
give Jonathan a call.

Per tiu artikolo, tri homoj kontaktis min. Unue, tiu S-ino Fillios
telefonvokis kaj sxi intencas lerni Esperanton.
li kaj diris ke mi intencas realigi gxin nur post 5 aux 6 jaroj,

malavara kiam temas pri nia grupo kaj gxenerale, sed mi
Januaron. La $500 probable estos tro multe, do eble
mi povos dividi la monon kun nova lerninto. Eble ni
povos havi konkurson: tiu, kiu plej rapide lernas Esperanton

Esperanto", "Step by Step in Esperanto", "The History
of the AEA" kaj aliaj libroj kiel "Kredu min, Sinjorino".

Cxiu esperantisto
scias ke Euxropo estus benata per Esperanto, kaj tial homoj
(anka.v CXE siol.net). Legu pli de la Brusela Komunikadcentro:

===========ENGLISH TRANSLATION===========
Here's the November newsletter, and finally the course is over.
Our course was very successful because of the many students
and the advertising about Esperanto in the newspaper.

Coming events:
Next meeting: Saturday, 6th December at 3pm at the Newcastle EcoHome
(67a Hobart Rd. New Lambton 2305, diagonally opposite West's). If you
want to come, please let me know by email or otherwise. All are welcome!

Zamenhof day: Saturday, 13th December at the Esperanto House in
Sydney, 143 Lawson St. Redfern 2016. We don't yet know whether
we will go as a group to Sydney, but all are welcome.

AEA/NZEA Congress: 19th to the 25th of January at Margate Conference
Centre, Redcliffe (Queensland). If you wish to participate or have a registration
form, write to me or to ronjuneperkins@powerup.com.au

Treasury:
For the month to date:
Sales: $0
Donations: $0
Course payments: $5 (+5)
Balance: $92.20 (+5)
I have put most of the money in a personal account at the bank, so that
way it will be safer.

Society news:
On Sunday, the 19th of October, the Fiesta cultural festival took
place. We had a table there and several people were interested
to hear about Esperanto. At 3pm we went to the PAN building
and taught, although only Daniel, Josh, Darwin, Andrew and
Jonathan attended. We wrote a letter to an Esperantist in
Brazil (who has already replied), and we might be able to
correspond more with him.

On Saturday, the 1st of November, our monthly meeting took
place. Andrew, Jonathan, Daniel and Jonathan's father
Peter attended. We also expected a Mrs. Jacky Fillios and
her son Daniel, but they didn't find the house. They intend
to come to the next meeting. We continued the teaching
started at the course and left several Esperanto posters for
Sue and Shani.

In addition to the small announcement in the Newcastle
Herald, there was a full article about me, which is reproduced
here:

From that article, three people contacted me. Firstly, this
Mrs. Fillios phoned me and she intends to learn Esperanto.
I also received a call from Gwenda Williamson from
New Zealand, who wanted me to send her the article.
Also, I received a message from Remy Sproelants from
Belgium who wanted to know about my sign-project. I
told him my aim and said that I want to realise it in 5 or 6
years time, but that didn't stop him from sending the message
to the 'reago' and 'uea-membroj' email lists. Also Mr. Tony
Peterson wrote to me and is now enthusiastically learning
Esperanto.

We all know that the NSW Esperanto Federation is very
generous to our group and in general, but I did not expect them
to send me money to attend the AEA/NZEA congress in
Brisbane next January. The $500 probably will be too much,
so maybe I could share the money with a new student. Perhaps
we could have a competition: the person who learns Esperanto
the fastest will receive support to go to Brisbane as a prize. They
also have proposed to send a donation of $5000 dollars, and
support somebody from our group to attend congresses over
the next 5 years.

We will be celebrating Zamenhof day in Sydney as every
year at Esperanto House, 143 Lawson St. Redfern. I
don't yet know whether we will be going as a group, but even
if we don't go, feel free to celebrate with the other Esperantists
in Sydney.

The NSW Esperanto Federation has sent two boxes of books
to lend to the other members of our group. Among them are
the cassette-course "Jen Nia Mondo", "Teach yourself Esperanto",
"Step by Step in Esperanto", "The History of the AEA" and other
books such as "Kredu min, Sinjorino".

For the coming meetings:
The December meeting will be a lesson for new Esperantists and
progressors (we will learn from "Jen nia Mondo")
I have not yet planned for January
If you wish to also have the list of books we possess in .xls format,
please write to me.

News from the world of Esperanto:
Do you have a mania? Are you an alcoholic, drug user, "eataholic",
sexaholic or have another mania? Perhaps your problems won't be
solved, but you can speak with other people with manias around
the world - in Esperanto! Read more from the Euxropa Bulteno:

On the first of May 2004, Europe will become bigger! Every Esperantist
knows that Europe would highly benefit from Esperanto, and that's
why people are aiming to let the rest of Europe know that an
appropriate alternative exists. Zlatko Tisjlar is organising a
language festival, financed by the Euxropa Komisio, and TEJO
is organising a seminar in Brussels to discuss the usage of Esperanto
in Europe.
"This project aims to strenthen a practical understanding of
European youth politics, knowledge of European affairs and the
importance and power of cooperation across borders, interchange
and reciprocal help," said Sonja Petrovic, a committee member of
TEJO.
The Slovenian Esperanto League is celebrating the European enlargement
too by a seminar.
"It will take place in Nova Gorica, Slovenia between the 29th of april
and the 2nd of May 2004," informs Anka Vozlic from SEL (anka.v @ siol.net)
(anka.v CXE siol.net). Read more from the Brussels Communications Centre:

Trevor Steele has resigned from his position at the UEA. He was
the only Australian at the UEA. Dirk Bindmann wrote: "We are losing
a respectable officer and will win back a brilliant author." Read more
about the resignation at http://periskope.blogspot.com and read
the article "La demisio de la artisto (27/10/03)". Apparently two
candidates have already been suggested.
