Societaj novajxoj:
FIESTA
Fiesta okazis je Auxstralia Tago, 26a de Januaro. Ni havis budon,
helpis pri la organizado de Fiesta, kaj tradukis cxiujn sxildojn al
Esperanto. Multaj homoj vizitis nian budon,
ni vendis tri instrulibroj kaj disdonis multajn foliojn. Ni ankaux
lernis pri alia esperantistino, Anne Gash
(kiu lernis Esperanton en Sidnejo antaux pluraj jaroj), kiuj ekde tiam
kontaktis nin, kaj Alan Libert ankaux
vizitis nian budon. Nia prezidanto, Jonathan, kaj sekretario, Andrew,
prizorgis la budon de la mateno gxis la frua
vespero. Fiesta ne nur estis bona oportuno disvastigi Esperanton, sed
ankaux oportuno plibonigi niajn kontaktojn
kun la ECC (Konsilantaro de Etnaj Komunumoj).
KURSO CXE MIGRANTA RIMEDCENTRO
Kvar homoj kontaktis nin kiuj volis partopreni kurson, sed ne povis
cxeesti WEA-kurson, do ni organizis kurson cxe la Migranta
Rimed-Centro, en Hamilton. Tri el ili estas
amikoj de Sandor Horvath, Vicprezidanto de AEA kaj Adelajdano, kaj la
alia estas Martin Gray el Singleton, kiu
cxeestis la somerkursaron en Adelajdo, kaj komencis lerni Esperanton
koresponde de Terry Manley, Redaktisto de
Telopeo.
WEA-KURSO
Estas tre urgxe, ke ni komencu reklami nian WEA-kurson kiu komencigxos
je la 4a de Majo. Ni devas havi suficxajn lernantojn almenaux unu
semajnon antauxe. Por detaloj, vidu

PASINTA KUNVENO
Nia pasinta kunveno estis je Jxauxdo, 17a de Januaro kaj ni tre gxojis
havi viziton de Volo Gütling el Sidnejo kaj Rainer Kurz,
Vicprezidanto de la Germana Esperanto-Asocio, kiu
logxas en Sidnejo (cxe Esperanto-Domo) gxis fino de Aprilo. Ankaux
cxeestis nia prezidanto, Jonathan, nia
vicprezidanto, Tony, kaj unu el la trapasintoj de la pasintjara
WEA-kurso, Jill Hackett. Rainer prezentis fotojn de
sia antauxnelonga vizito al Japanujo.
LA PREZIDANTO PAROLAS
La Prezidanto de la Auxstralia Esperanto-Asocio, Marcel Leereveld, en
ekskluziva intervjuo kun NES, indikis ke liaj cxefaj celoj estas pli
zorgeme elspezi monon, levi la lingvan
nivelon, kaj pacigi kaj plidemokratemigi AEA. Pli frue, S-ro Leereveld
petis, tra Esperanto sub la Suda Kruco,
"niajn membrojn solvi siajn malakordojn inter si, ne publike ... [ili]
ofte bazigxas sur nuraj miskomprenoj".
Sed al NES, li indikis ke li akceptis prezidantigxi "cxar melburnaj
Esperantistoj timas senbridan forjxetadon
de mono ate de kelkaj estraranoj". Cxi tiu temo estis tre tikla dum la
kongreso - Sandor Horvath raportis ke
"kelkaj homoj opiniis ke ne valoras inviti eksterlandanajn instruistojn
... [ili] kostas multe ... Tamen,
eksterlandanoj aldonas multe da koloro kaj internacieco al la kursaro",
sed S-ro Leereveld deziras "elspezi malpli
pri eksterlandaj instruistoj (Euxropo ne uzas niajn)".
Fakte cxi tiu afero pri monelspezo estas tre malnova en AEA, kaj kutima
en preskaux cxiuj organizioj. Ni havas multajn fondusojn (cxefe de la
testamentoj de eksmembroj) - cxu
oni uzu ilin, aux konservu ilin por la estonteco? En 2004, la kasisto,
Steve Pitney, proponis ke oni cxiujare
pliigu la fondusojn laux la CPI (indeksumigi ilin), kaj tio estas la
modelo kiun NES sekvas. La opinio
de via redaktisto estas ke AEA devas konservi la kapitalon de la
fondusoj (kaj pliigi ilin laux CPI), sed
senkonserveme elspezi la interezon per projektoj kiuj povas disvastigi
Esperanton - la Novkastela modelo.
S-ro Leereveld ankaux volas fokusi sur antauxinversitatajn instruistojn
kaj sur junulojn, kaj helpi Esperanton en Indonezio. Tio estas celo por

versxajne neniu kritikos tiun politikon. Li volas organizi agadon tra
la lokaj grupoj precipe, sed "niaj provincaj
federacioj bezonas pli da aktiveco kaj ni cxiuj devas propagandi pli en
la kamparo" (t.e. malcentrigema politiko).
Per sia sperto de 1964-65 funkcie de Prezidanto de AEA, S-ro Leereveld
versxajne estos bona Prezidanto - kaj li donas konsilon al individuoj
por antauxigi Esperanton en la nova
jarmilo - Dauxre studu la lingvon anstataux nur ludi per gxi, kaj
netrude diskonigu Esperanto en viaj
laborejoj kaj kluboj. Bela sentimo!
NOVKASTELANO PUBLIKIGAS EN ESK

The new year has already begun very quickly and is already getting away
from us - but the year ahead of us
will be exciting. We have a new webpage, at
http://newcastle.esperanto.org.au, and as you can see, it is still
young! The Australian Esperanto movement is becoming more active, with
several working groups for
different functions. The latest Esperanto course in Newcastle is
already successful, and we are already
starting to advertise our May course at WEA.
Coming Events:
Next meeting: Thursday, 21st of April at the Octapod (TPI House, Unit
3/231 King St, Newcastle,
opposite Civic Park). The meeting planned for the 7th of April probably
won't take place, but contact me first,
because we will possibly hold it anyway. A lesson is included. If you
wish to come, please let me know by
email or otherwise. All are welcome!
Cultural Stomp Fesitval: Saturday, 28th of May from 12 midday to 9pm at
Civic Park and Newcastle City Hall.
Again, our secretary is the organiser of this citywide festival which
celebrates cultural diversity. Our society will
contribute with a stall and translation of signs for the whole
festival. For more information, phone Andrew on

WEA Course: Promote this course among your friends - 8 Wednesdays from
May 4 (you must register before
the 27th of April) 6pm-8:30pm. Adults pay $184, Concession and Seniors
pay $174. We must promote this
course very actively, because without enough students the course will

Society news:
FIESTA
Fiesta took place on Australia Day, 26th of January. We had a stall,
helped to organise Fiesta and translated
all the signs to Esperanto. Many people visited our stall, we sold
three teaching books and gave out many
brochures. We also learnt about another Esperanto speaker, Anne Gash
(who learnt Esperanto in Sydney
many years ago), who has since contacted us, and Alan Libert also
visited our stall. Our president, Jonathan,
and secretary, Andrew, ran the stall from morning to early evening.
Fiesta was not only a good opportunity to
promote Esperanto, but also an opportunity to improve our contacts with
ECC (Ethnic Communities Council).
COURSE AT MIGRANT RESOURCE CENTRE
Four people contacted us who wanted to take part in a course, but
couldn't attend a WEA course, so we
organised a course at the Migrant Resource Centre, in Hamilton. Three
of them are friends of Sandor
Horvath, Vice-President of AEA and Adelaide resident, and the other is
Martin Gray from Singleton, who
attended the summer school in Adelaide, and has begun learning
Esperanto by correspondence from Terry
Manley, editor of Telopeo.
WEA COURSE
It is very urgent that we begin promoting our WEA course which will
begin on the 4th of May. We must have
enough students at least one week beforehand. For details, see under
"Coming Events".
LAST MEETING
Our last meeting was on Thursday, 17th of January and we had the
pleasure of the visit of Volo Gütling from
Sydney and Rainer Kurz, Vice-President of the German Esperanto
Association, who is living in Sydney (at
Esperanto House) until the end of April. The other attendants were our
president, Jonathan, our
vice-president, Tony, and one of the participants in our WEA course of
last year, Jill Hackett. Rainer
presented photos from his recent trip to Japan.
THE PRESIDENT SPEAKS
The President of the Australian Esperanto Association, Marcel
Leereveld, in an exclusive interview with NES,
indicated that his main aims are to spend money more carefully, raise
the language level, and pacify AEA,
making it more democratic. Earlier, Mr. Leereveld requested, through
Esperanto sub la Suda Kruco, that "our
members solve their disagreements among themselves, not publicly ...
[they] often are based on simple
misunderstandings". But to NES, he indicated that he accepted the
office of president "because Melbourne
Esperanto speakers fear the unbridled waste of money by some committee
members". This subject was very
controversial during the congress - Sandor Horvath reported that "some
people believe that it's not worth
inviting overseas teachers ... [they] cost a lot ... Neverthless,
foreigners add a lot of colour and internationality
to the course", but Mr. Leereveld wishes to "spend less on overseas
teachers (Europe doesn't use ours)".
In fact, this issue of spending money is very old in AEA, and common in
almost all organisations. We have
many funds (mainly from the wills of ex-members) - should we use them,
or conserve them for the future? In
2004, the treasuer, Steve Pitney, suggested that AEA increase the funds
every year by the CPI (index them),
and that is the model which NES follows. The opinion of your editor is
that AEA should conserve the capital of
the funds (and index them), but unreservedly spend the interest on
projects which can promote Esperanto -
the Newcastle model.
Mr. Leereveld also wants to focus on pre-tertiary teachers and on young
people, and help Esperanto in
Indonesia. That is an aim for which he has a lot of support - seemingly
nobody will criticise that policy. He
wants to organise action through the local groups in particular, but
"our provincial federations need more
activity and we all must promote more in country areas" (i.e.
decentralisation policy).
Thanks to his experiences from 1964-65 as President of AEA, it seems
Mr. Leereveld will be a good President
- and he gives this advice to individuals to promote Esperanto in the
new millenium - Continue to study the
language instead of just playing with it, and unintrusively make
Esperanto known in your workplaces and
clubs. A nice sentiment!

published in the Australia-wide
review, Esperanto sub la Suda Kruco. His last article was a film review
of "The Passion of the Christ", a film by
