pasintaj ses monatoj, kaj tial la novajxletero ne estis skribita.

La AEA nuntempe kunsidas cxe Lincoln College en Adelajdo. Niaj spionoj tie informas nin pri la nova konsisto
de la Estraro. Matthew Maguire ne akceptis renomumon pro lia laboro. Du tre kapablaj kaj viglaj esperantistoj
nomumatis por la pozicio de Prezidanto - Penny Vos-Pym kaj Marcel Leereveld. Marcel Leereveld estis
elektita kun plimulto da vocxdonoj. La cetero de la estraro estas:

NOVA NES-ESTRARO
Same grava elekto estas nia loka Estraro-elekto. La estraro ne multe sxangxigxis sed pligrandigxis. La nova

WEA-KURSO
De la pasinta novajxletero vi jam ne scias cxu WEA akceptis havi Esperanto-kurson. Nu, la kurso estas jam
fininta kaj du homoj sukcese trapasis gxin - Jill Hackett kaj Richard Paradiso. Ankaux du aliaj homoj cxeestis
la unuan lecionon kaj pagis por la tuta kurso, sed ili ne revenis post tio. Nun ni komencas reklami la venontan
kurson, kiu komencos je la 9a de Februaro. Por aligxi al la kurso, bonvolu telefoni al WEA je 4925 4200.

SEMINARIO "Esperanto kaj Edukado" CXE LA UNIVERSITATO
Nia seminario okazis cxe la universitato de Novkastelo je la 4a de Septembro kun gastparolanto Janet
Rawling-Keitel. La Novkastela Esperanto-Societo, la Multkreda Asocio kaj la Huntera Brancxo de la
Auxstralia Asocio pri la Unuigxintaj Nacioj (UNAA) kunvenis kun la celo "esplori la tauxgecon de Esperanto
esti enkonduko al lingva edukado en Auxstralio". Dek ses homoj cxeestis inkluzive de la loka Parlamentano,
Sharon Grierson, du kapelanoj de la Universitato, la direktisto de la Novkastela Islama komunumo (kiu estas
ankaux Direktisto de Arabaj Studoj cxe la Migranta Rimeda Centro), reprezentantoj de la organizanta
komitato, Prezidanto de AEA Matthew Maguire, kaj Dianne Mitchell, kiu reprezentis Sid Wolifson, Prezidanto
de la Esperanto-Federacio de NSK.

La Auxstralia Esperanto-Kongreso okazas nun cxe Lincoln College en Nordadelajdo. La kongreso, kiu

Oni jam akceptis instrui Esperanton sur Pac-Boato. La sxipo, organizita de Japana senprofitcela organizio,

Here is the first newsletter of 2005, and the first newsletter since April 2004! I have been very busy for the
past six months, and for that reason the newsletter has not been written.
We now have an internet mailing list at ncesperanto-subscribe@yahoogroups.com. All members should join
this group as soon as possible. From this group you will receive the newsletter, and you will be able to
participate in group conversations on the internet. It is for the two groups - the Newcastle Esperanto Society
and Friends of NES, which is the group for non-Esperanto speakers who support Esperanto.

Coming events:
Next meeting: Thursday, 20th December at the Octapod (TPI House, Unit 3/231 King St, Newcastle,
opposite Civic Park). Lesson included. If you want to come, please let me know by email or otherwise. All
welcome!

Fiesta cultural festival: Wednesday, 26th January at the Foreshore, next to Wharf Rd. There will be an
Esperanto stand during the day and the festival will begin at 8:00am and finish with fireworks in the early
evening. All signs at Fiesta will be in at least two languages: English and Esperanto. Here is a great
opportunity to make Esperanto seen and implement our "Bilingual City" plan.

Society News:
NEW AEA COMMITTEE
The AEA is currently convening at Lincoln College in Adelaide. Our spies there have informed us about the
new makeup of the Committee. Matthew Maguire did not accept renomination because of his workload. Two
very capable and active Esperanto speakers were nominated for the position of President - Penny Vos-Pym
and Marcel Leereveld. Marcel Leereveld was elected with a majority of votes. The rest of the committee
includes:
Vice-Presidents - Sandor Horvath and Penny Vos-Pym
Secretary - Miranda Lutz (sole candidate), Vice-Secretary - Henry Broadbent
Treasurer - Steve Pitney (sole candidate), Vice-Treasurer - Jennifer Bishop

All of these names are famous in the Australian Esperanto community because they are active and very
capable and affable. In future newsletters we will interview the new committee members.

NEW NES COMMITTEE
A similarly important election was our local Committee election. The committee has not changed much but has
become bigger. The new committee includes:
President - Jonathan Moylan, Vice-President - Tony Peterson
Secretary - Andrew Spannenberg
Organisers of Friends of NES - Samuel Gibson and Daniel Urquhart
All of these committee members were the sole candidates for their positions. We are waiting for more
information from FNES about the administration of their organisation.

WEA COURSE
You would not know from the past newsletter whether WEA had yet accepted to have an Esperanto course.
Well, the course has already finished and two people have successfully passed it - Jill Hackett and Richard
Paradiso. Two other people also attended the first lesson and paid for the whole course, but they did not
return after that. Now we are beginning to advertise the next course, which will commence on the 9th of
February. To join the course, please phone WEA on 4925 4200.

SEMINAR "Esperanto and Education" AT THE UNIVERSITY
Our seminar took place at the University of Newcastle on the 4th of September with guest speaker Janet
Rawling-Keitel. The Newcastle Esperanto Society, the Multifaith Association and the Hunter Branch of the
United Nations Association of Australia (UNAA) met with the aim "to explore the appropriateness of Esperanto
as an introduction to language education in Australia". Sixteen people attended including our local
Parliamentarian, Sharon Grierson, two chaplains from the University, the leader of the Newcastle Islamic
Community (who is also the Director of Arabic Studies at the Migrant Resource Centre), representatives from
the organising committee, President of AEA Matthew Maguire, and Dianne Mitchell, who represented Sid
Wolifson, President of the Esperanto Federation of NSW.

OUR AIMS FOR THE YEAR
Our main aim: To have Esperanto adopted as the chief second language in the Australian School system,
especially in Newcastle.
Other goals:
* To help several people in the group to gain the Baza diploma by the middle of 2005 (this is why we need
regular lessons)
* By December 2005, one or two in the group should be at the level of Esperanto instructor.
* To collaborate further with other Esperanto groups, in particular the fledgling Central Coast group.
* To help Newcastle to become a bilingual city, including by producing/translating signs at festivals such as
Fiesta, Stomp, Human Rights Day, etc.

All these goals should be followed according to the rubrics of the UEA - Information, Teaching and Making
Esperanto Useful

One of the very useful ways to spread Esperanto in Newcastle is to work with non-Esperanto speakers
through the organisation FNES - it can grow very quickly because it is easy to join and you don't have to learn
Esperanto.

News from the Esperanto world:

The Australian Esperanto Congress is currently taking place at Lincoln College in North Adelaide. The
congress, which started on the 9th of January, will finish on the 21st. Reports from the congress are already
positive, and the General Meeting took place on the 11th and 14th of January. The new committee has
already been elected. Guest speakers have arrived from Europe and Africa, but unfortunately the creator of
the Indonesian Esperanto Association, Hazairin Rum Junep, could not obtain a visa to attend the congress.

The pope has, as every year, given his Christmas greeting in Esperanto as well. Radio-NESTO, which has
been born from the internet Esperanto teaching community NESTO, has broadcast the greeting from
14:00-14:30 GMT for a whole week after Christmas. You can listen to it at

Esperanto teaching has already been accepted on the Peace Boat. The ship, organised by a Japanese
not-for-profit organisation, carries 900 travellers to approximately 20 ports for three months three times a year
to give them a greater awareness of other world citizens. English and Spanish are taught to interested people
during the trip. Now Esperanto, the language of peace, will also be taught on the Peace Boat by the Vice
President of the Australian Esperanto Association, Penny Vos-Pym, if the project goes ahead. To support her,

Another Australian Esperanto speaker, Dianne Lukes, has just finished a two-month trip to Indonesia to help
Hazairin Junep to restart an Esperanto movement there. She has already published a report about the trip and
the situation in Indonesia, and has made several proposals to the Oceania Commision, which at this stage are
still being considered.
